XFree86推出新的4.0版，此次的版本更新在XFree86的發展史上別具意義，除了加入一些新的顯示卡芯片支持外，發展小組大量的改寫了XFree86 X Server，加入了很多有趣的新功能，所以很多方面還不是很完備，提供給敢試敢嘗鮮的使用者使用。
目前比較缺乏的是沒有一個好用的設置工具，設定起來會比較麻煩，所以不建議新手安裝4.0版，另外要注意的是某些在3.3.x版支援的硬體在4.0是不支援的，4.0目前的硬體支援狀況可以參閱Driver Status for XFree86[tm] 4.0 。
